 What is this?
Flame retardant fabric is of paramount importance and criticality in working environments that are exposed to flammability. In environments of foundries, welding units, machine shops, oil and gas industries etc., the personnel are exposed to conditions such as flames, flash fires, strong radiant heat, hot surfaces, or sparks.
The requirement in these environments is of using flame retardant fabrics. Natural untreated fibers such as cotton can easily ignite when exposed to fire hazards. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester are also not suited for such environments, as once ignited, they melt to form a hot sticky substance with a very high temperature, which can cause severe skin injury and high degree burns. Moreover, the fabric will melt and will drip with the flames, propagating the spread of fire.
Flame retardant clothing is therefore, necessary for use in such environments where there is a risk of incidental contact or short term exposure to fire or flammable material. Flame retardant fabrics are different from fireproof fabrics.
